Last Day of May

I can't believe that May is almost over. What a busy weekend we've had. After Chuck E. Cheese, we came home and did yard work. Hannah stayed up late and lost a tooth. You might be able to see the small gap in this picture, just to the left of her two front teeth.

Saturday, we went to McDaniel Farm Park with some friends from church. We grilled out and had some yummy watermelon! Josiah came prepared with crayon and paper to draw a map so we don't get lost and a duck noise maker from "Ride the Ducks" in case he did get lost, I guess.

Today, we had some friends over after church for lunch and a swim. The water was a bit chilly as we did not get the heater going, but it was such a warm day.

Kid Time at Chuck E. Cheese

The kids had been asking for quite some time to go to this place.

With schoolwork done, I had no excuse and it was a good way to

celebrate. It was a nice morning and not crowded yet. There were

some new games since we went last. Josiah's favorite was the

simulated roller coaster ride and Hannah's was the horse ride.

Adventures in My Father's World - Last Day!

Yeah! We're done with our 180 days. Hannah is really excited about being able to wake up and just run outside and play or help me in the garden.

Adventures - American History

This is our final week of lessons! We are actually done with these two books - American Pioneers and Patriots (fictional stories about children living in the time period) and . . .

Exploring American History (a text book style account of people and events).

We've listened to and learned some of the songs in Celebrate America this year also.
Together we've read many books from the library and watched videos about America and it's famous people. Some serious, some fun. This is America, Charlie Brown was very enjoyable for the kids.

Recently, we read a fun book called The Scrambled States of America and Hannah worked a United States foam puzzle.

A Great Family Movie

This is a movie our family loves. It's good, clean, wholesome entertainment. It was also made by a homeschool family and the music in it is wonderful! (Way to go John!) This fellow is the creator of 'Heartstrings', 'Siblings: What a Blast', 'Bubble Trouble', and 'Salvation Mountain', too. If you're looking for a movie this summer, I would recommend these. Kids at the Park

Friday night, we met some of our homeschool friends at Rhodes Jordan park. After a supper of baked potatoes with the works, the kids ran wild! They enjoyed the ducks and geese and watching someone fish. They played on the equipment and some of them played freeze tag. The adults talked. Some parents had to watch over little ones. We had desserts and were there til after dark.

We all loved being able to be outside in the fresh air after the rain.

What a fun time it was!

Trees in a Broccoli Forest

Hannah has been doing alot of reading on her own lately and while going through our library at home found this cookbook for kids.

She immediately wanted to start "cooking". It's great because she can read the instructions herself and it encourages her to eat more fruits and vegetables.

This picture's a bit fuzzy, but it shows her assembling the plate. I cut the carrots for her. She's using frozen grapes instead of cherry tomatoes, which we did not have on hand.

Now she's adding the dip, which she made herself. I could tell that she was quite pleased at being able to accomplish all of this on her own with very little help from me.

After a sprinkling of parsley flakes, it was ready to enjoy!

Fun Math

Josiah is "filling orders" for me as he places plastic bears in numbered cups (Discovery Toys -found at Thrift Store).

The number of bears in the cup should match the number on the side of the cup. He even tried to match the color until he ran out of enough of a color.

Next, Josiah makes a necklace by following the pattern on the necklace that I made using noodles that we colored with food coloring and vinegar.

They still smell like vinegar when you open the box, but I like the smell.

Hannah wears one of the necklaces as she uses the bears now to help her with understanding division.

Adventures - Birds

Here's a sampling of Hannah's state sheets. We put all 50 of them in sheet protectors and put them in a binder. We enjoyed learning about the state birds. Using the cards included in her curriculum as a guide, she colored the bird and flower on her sheet. She also wrote in the state's initials, the capitol city and added a sticker of the state flag.
During the winter, we kept a log of the birds we saw outside our window. Here is what we saw from most often to least often.

Black-capped chickadee / Cardinal and Tufted Titmice /American Goldfinch and Eastern Bluebird / Purple finch /House finch and House Wren / Mourning Dove and Junco /Nuthatch /Pine Sisken and Blue jay / Red-bellied Woodpecker and Downy Woodpecker



This Bird Songs book from Aunt Charlotte was fun for looking up birds and also for identifying birds that we could not see, like the barred owl that Josiah and I heard one night - Hoo, Hoo, Hoo-Hooo.

This Eyewitness Explorers book that I found at the Thrift Store is also interesting. . . . . Keep watching Wordless Wednesdays for more of our snapshots of birds.

"If I lived on a farm . . . "

. . . these are the things I would do every day." 1. Get dressed.

2. Feed the chickens. 3. Milk the cow. 4. Gather the eggs. 5. Garden.

6. Feed the horses. 7. Feed the ducks. 8. Feed the rabbits.

9. Milk the goat. 10. Change clothes. 11. Go to bed and actually sleep.

(This was not an assignment. Just the imaginings of a young girl with a desire for country livin'.)

Ephesians 4:29

Do you know what Ephesians 4:29 says? Some time back, Hannah had the assignment of putting a jumble of words together to form this passage of scripture. Josiah had his own set of words to play with, too.
Here Hannah is working at it. "Words with capitol letters probably come first and words with a period come at the end of a sentence."

Then she added her own choice of pictures. These were from when we did the story of Nabal's wife, Abigail. Anyone want to offer an application?

Josiah enjoyed using the tape roller and cutting out his own pieces.

Adventures of Flat Sarah/ Flat Sue

Since we have completed our studies of all fifty states, I got this fun idea - it's not original, I know. Hannah was very excited about it as you can see. She created a Flat Sarah and a Flat Sue.

I typed a letter to go with each one and we mailed them off. Flat Sarah is starting out in Alaska, since we know someone who lives there and Flat Sue is heading to Tennessee where Hannah's grandparents live. We hope to stay in touch with their whereabouts via emails. And we will chart their progress and see which one travels to the most states.

Adventures with Magnets

This was part of our science for this year. The kids found it fascinating. The kit included cards explaining how to do each experiment and almost everything you would need.

I only got pictures of this one - showing how same poles push against each other. Wow!
