Hannah, Please Help Me with My Math

 Hi, would you like to do some math? We have picture cards that represent ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. I will be the teacher. Say you have 2,475 and 3,645. When you combine them you have 5 thousands, 10 hundreds, 11 tens, and 10 ones. We can't write the number like that. If one of our sections has a 2 digit number, we have to trade to make it 1 digit. In the above picture we have traded our 10 ones for a ten, making our tens a whopping 12! We need to do some more trading.

 Okey, that's good. You traded 10 of your tens for a hundred. Now we have 11 hundreds. Do we need to do moe trading? Yes! You can trade 10 of your hundreds for a thousand leaving you with 6 thousands, 1 hundreds, 2 tens, and zero ones. In other words 6,120. Good Job!

Summer Lessons - Tuesday

Tuesdays are Math Days. We have been having fun with Right Start Math Games. Hannah and I play Corners. When you place a card next to another one, the color has to match and if the total of the two numbers is divisible by 5, you get points. If you put your card in a "corner" you can get more points if both numbers are divisible by 5. The first person to 200 wins.


Josiah likes to play "Go to the Dump", which is a mathematical version of GO FISH. You try to get pairs that will equal 10. The person who has the most matches after all the cards are gone is the winner.

Our game actually has a dump truck (Josiah's idea).

A Fresh Start with Right Start

Spring is a time for reassessment. One of the things that needed tweeking in our homeschool was MATH. The old method of memorization of math facts which I grew up with and worked for me, wasn't working for The Roses Homeschool.
We had tried a sample of a program that I thought would be a good fit for us, but I wasn't sure. While at the GHEA Conference, we stopped at the Right Start Math booth. The children are often drawn in by their colorful manipulatives. We ended up talking to one of the ladies there for a long time. I often will ask the salesperson if they have been using the product and how long, and their experience with it. The woman shared with me that she had been asked to come and help at the last moment, because a regular could not make it. After that I expected her to say that she didn't know much about it. Instead she went on to share how it has changed the way they do math in their family and it includes fun and games, not boring drills.
While I was talking, Hannah was playing a math card game with a young boy at the booth. I began realizing that this might be the answer to a better math experience for us. Once I was convinced, Theron was right there ready to get whatever we needed. It was ordered and when the package arrived the kids were so excited.


I was excited, too and couldn't wait to get into it. There is so much in this box. This is just what's on top. Maybe I'll share more as time goes on and we begin to use the items.

Over the summer, I will be working with Josiah through Level B slowly and working with Hannah in Transition Lessons, so that in the fall she can begin Level D.

Fun Math

Josiah is "filling orders" for me as he places plastic bears in numbered cups (Discovery Toys -found at Thrift Store).

The number of bears in the cup should match the number on the side of the cup. He even tried to match the color until he ran out of enough of a color.

Next, Josiah makes a necklace by following the pattern on the necklace that I made using noodles that we colored with food coloring and vinegar.

They still smell like vinegar when you open the box, but I like the smell.

Hannah wears one of the necklaces as she uses the bears now to help her with understanding division.
